Feature Film Competition – “My love affair with marriage”

On the 21st of July, the last film for the feature film competition was screened. Directed by Signe Baumane and is titled "My love affair with marriage".

The film delves into the life of Zelma, who grew up believing that love could solve all her
problems, as long as she adhered to societal expectations of femininity. However, as she
matured, she questioned the concept of love and the pressure to conform to gender
stereotypes. The film explores the themes of self-identity, societal expectations, and the pursuit
of love, as Zelma navigates through different relationships and challenges.
The story begins with a tale of human creation, where humans were initially created with two
heads, united in perfect harmony. The gods, viewing them as a threat, separated them, leaving
humans searching for their other halves. This idea of needing a soulmate and the importance of
marriage is deeply ingrained in society.
As Zelma embarks on a journey through relationships, she starts to realize the damaging effects
of trying to fit in and change for others. When she receives a marriage proposal from Sergei,
she believes that she must say yes without taking time to think. In her marriage with Sergei, she
faces isolation from her friends, constant comparisons to his mother, and eventually, emotional
abuse when her art gains attention.
Despite the challenges, Zelma finds love again in Bo, whom she meets on a trip abroad. Their
long-distance relationship and communication barriers create further complexities. Bo proposes,
and while hesitant, Zelma agrees. However, their marriage brings unhappiness, and Bo’s
solution is to have a child, believing it will mend their relationship. Zelma, on the other hand,
seeks a divorce.
During their separation, Bo reveals a shared interest in dressing in women’s clothes, and Zelma
responds with acceptance and support.
The film presents a compelling narrative that challenges traditional gender norms and the
societal pressure to conform. Zelma’s journey of self-discovery and acceptance is a powerful
representation of the complexities of love and relationships. Zelma’s struggle to find her voice
and assert her identity in a world that expects her to conform showcases the importance of
embracing one’s inner rebellion.
Furthermore, the film explores the notion of marriage as an expectation rather than a choice
based on mutual love and understanding. Additionally, the movie challenges conventional ideas
of love through the acceptance and support shown by Zelma towards Bo, emphasizing the need
for open-mindedness and empathy.
“My love affair with marriage” is a thought-provoking film that encourages viewers to question
societal norms and embrace their authentic selves.
