A truly engaging and practical workshop that you don’t want to miss. The course focuses on developing skills, trying out a wide variety of techniques, and committing to the particular processing and implementation of one’s own idea. Part of the course is guidance, for the simple installation of a home studio, further processing of the created data, and the creation of animation clips. For the tutor, Marcus Grysczok, this is not the first time working with children from Kosovo. In 2020 during our hybrid festival year, Grysczok had a wonderful online workshop.

Scratchatopia

Tutor: Steven Woloshen

Dates: 15 July (Day-Long)

Location: Cinema Jusuf Gërvalla, Pejë

Age: All Ages

If you want to create like a painter and a filmmaker, here’s a great opportunity to make your own 35mm animated or experimental film without a camera and without processing film. Both Norman McLaren and Len Lye explored this technique in the 1930s and almost 80 years later, it still continuously surprises audiences.

In this workshop led by Steven Woloshen, we will explore the multiple techniques of camera-less filmmaking and discover new ones along the way. Participants are encouraged to choose materials and tools that work effectively, then scratch, paint and collage directly onto the surface of clear leader – black leader or previously shot material. We also look at popular methods of synchronizing soundtracks and digitizing hand-made films.

The workshop is organized with the support of the Canadian Embassy in Zagreb.

Animated Delusions

In addition to making films and comics, Andy runs an animation program at Hostos Community College in New York City and is a Visiting Lecturer in the AFVS Department of Harvard University.
