Arco: The Future Is Bright and Bearable
How far into the future can you imagine?
Arco, the award-winning sci-fi animated feature by French director Ugo Bienvenu, is coming to Anibar.
How far into the future can you imagine? Must every vision of tomorrow be dystopian? Is there still hope for humanity? Can history teach us how to move forward? And can we still dare to dream of a brighter tomorrow?
Art and popular culture have often anticipated realities that later became our own. That’s why you shouldn’t miss Arco, one of the most breathtaking animated features in this year’s selection. Premiering at Cannes, this visually stunning piece offers an imaginative and hopeful vision of the future.
The story begins in the idyllic year 2932, where humans live among the clouds and travel through time in rainbow-powered flight suits. Ten-year-old Arco sets off on a journey to the distant past in hopes of seeing dinosaurs, but a mishap sends him to the year 2075 instead. The world he arrives in is much different. Humans coexist with robots, while extreme weather and climate catastrophe have become part of everyday life. Children grow up without physical affection, and genuine human connection is slowly disappearing. There, Arco meets a ten-year-old girl, Iris. The two children from different eras embark on an extraordinary adventure and reveal the true meaning of human relationships.
With breathtaking visuals inspired by anime aesthetics, Arco explores what it truly means to be human. The film reflects on what our essence is, how we evolve across different times, and what it takes to move closer to the world we want to create.
