Anibar Is Taking You Behind the Curtain

Following in the footsteps of The Truman Show and The Matrix, Spanish filmmaker Alberto Vázquez's third animated feature, Decorado, reflects on what lies behind the reality we perceive and whether it is possible to escape a stage so carefully designed

Anibar presents another animated feature that explores the human condition in contemporary society. Mixing dark humor with existential unease, the film examines surveillance, control, conformity, the growing role of artificial intelligence in shaping systems of repression and the troubles of the man trying to adapt to a sick society.

Set in a bleak, gray town populated by anthropomorphic animals living in poverty, unemployment and a constant state of paranoia, the story centers around Arnold, a middle-aged mouse who has recently stopped taking his “happiness pills”. Arnold begins to realize that reality itself is nothing more than a theatrical set (decorado) carefully orchestrated by the omnipresent corporation Alma. Believing there must be another reality, he turns towards the forest beyond the city. Rumored to be the only path to freedom, it is also a place from which no one returns. Despite the danger, he goes into the unknown, driven by the hope that life exists beyond the dark dystopia he knows.
