From animation festivals to Hollywood: The inspiring presentation of Mike Hollingsworth at Anibar 2024

On Saturday, at the “Jusuf Gërvalla” Cinema, renowned animator Mike Hollingsworth delivered a special presentation titled “From Animation Festivals to Hollywood AND THEN BACK TO FESTIVALS!”. Hollingsworth’s presentation detailed his humorous journey from creating animated shorts for festivals like Anibar to his significant success in creating Netflix’s first animated series, BoJack Horseman.

Mike Hollingsworth shared his experiences and challenges throughout his professional journey with the audience. He explained how the skills he gained from creating independent short films helped him quickly rise through the ranks of the animation industry. Hollingsworth was the first animator hired by Netflix when he directed the pilot episode for BoJack Horseman in 2013. He oversaw the production of all six seasons as Supervising Director and later as Co-Executive Producer.

BoJack Horseman achieved extraordinary critical acclaim. It was ranked as the best Netflix original series of all time by Thrillist and Uproxx, while IndieWire named it the best animated series of all time. The BBC declared BoJack Horseman “the 21st Century’s best animation”. However, Mike humorously admitted that his parents still haven’t seen the show and have no plans to, even though he pays for their Netflix subscription!
