Alienation through animation

Valton Marku

Movies that mostly deal with alienation, a society that is stuck with vices, life’s traumas, stress, depression and unfortunate events, in the second international competition of Anibar. Five movies that compete are: Lonely Orbit, Under the Rib Cage, Sweet Night, Coyote and Life 24.

There is nothing nicer than time spent among friends. Of course, over-working needs to be dealt with. The movie Lonely Orbit from the producers Frederic Siegel and Benjamin Morard talks about the work and the psychological state of a satellite technician. He faces loneliness and a job with a lot of responsibilities. When he realizes that he is alienated, meaning he is a slave of his job more than the projections outside of the job, his brain creates chaos, a chaos that causes a chain reaction in the universe. There are alone and people who are lonely in the world. The people in the first group live their lives in a bad manner, because not only they are alone, they are not content with that fact. The second group is in harmony with their loneliness. On both occasions, alienation is one of the reasons.

A simple Google search about symptoms might suggest tons of other illnesses. Other illnesses are right around the corner when living in insecurity about income, in a boring routine filled with vices.

The producer Bruno Tondeur with Under the Rib Cage presents the usual escapes that humans make as a protest the harsh reality and he mirrors this through the main character, a boy that thinks he is going to die. He has a job, an apartment, depression and a bad physical state; in other words, a lot of stress. Just as other modern and post-modern societies, escaping reality is characterized with the consumption of drugs, alcohol, sheltering oneself from the world and detachment from reality. This animation projects all of these for about thirteen minutes and it is not a coincidence that a lot of people relate to it.

A family of coyotes are feeding themselves with their prey. A group of wolves distinguish them, they kill almost the entire family and eat their prey. There is only one male coyote left. The movie “Coyote” by the producer Lorenz Wunderle addresses not being able to overcome a trauma. Without his wife and children, the coyote loses the meaning of life. They are everywhere. His every day is characterized with their traumatic memories. Disappointed with humanly emotions, he tries to surpass this state.  Being stuck with trauma takes him to a dead-end. The film “Coyote” tells this story.

An armed attack happens on a street. Four characters get out their car but when they get back in, it does not turn on. To survive they need to escape and blow their car up. The bomb that was detonated takes a lively form and through melancholy accepts its own destructive ending. During that process, she finds out about someone hidden in the trunk and liberates them. The movie “Life24” from the producer Kristjan Holm represents the detached life of the bachelor named Einar Jernskjegg. As unfixable as it is, 24 hours of his life are uncanny. After a rough night, with his own will, he decides to get into the trunk of a parked car. This car is blown up, but the bachelor Einar wins the biggest lottery: his life is saved by a bomb. Sometimes, impassivity brings the best fate.
