Educating the new generations

One of the main aims of Anibar, is to educate new generations. Therefore for 10 years now, the festival turns into a space for young people to learn from professionals. This year we organize three workshops for young people starting by Monday, at 10:00 am.

Workshop 1: Visual storytelling, using stop-motion animation

Szigeti Máté was born in Budapest, Hungary 1996. In 2018 he graduated with a movie and animation filmmaker degree in Illyés Animation School, in Budaörs. In years 2016-2017 he was doing multiple animation workshops for kids, in animation festivals such as Primanima or KAFF in Hungary. Since he graduated, he works as a 2d animator and illustrator, in multiple projects, such as Igen a Nemek közt by Katalin Piczkó, Szélfogó by Ágnes Győrfi, or ALP by Julia Müller. Visual storytelling, using stop-motion animation. Cut-out animation is one of the oldest animation techniques, though it’s still a quite popular technique mostly in commercials or small spot films. During this workshop the participants will learn the basics of cut-out animation, animating frame by frame in stop motion, and will create their own short stop motion animated videos, using different simple materials and techniques.

Workshop 2: Training Of Trainers

Zsuzsanna Szabó, is an Hungarian stop motion animator, filmmaker and teacher of animation, currently living in the Netherlands. At the time she does a part time study “Mastercourse in Art Education” at the Hanzehoogeschool/Académie Minerva in Groningen. She graduated at the Hungarian Design Academy in 1998 at the Animation Department and in 1999 at the Art Education Department. Since then, she has worked as an animator, story-developer, set-maker; She organized animation events, like the International Animation Day and participated in film-festivals a.o. Klik Festival in Amsterdam and Primanima in Budaőrs, Hungary. She has been teaching animation in workshops, schools, universities and professional courses in Hungary and abroad. Animation workshops for young animators/filmmakers aim at professional skill development and it is often dictated by the needs of the market and the industry. These diverse targets and purposes demand different approaches, time frames, technical/spacial/personal circumstances, teaching methods – even vocabulary.
Participants of this Training of Trainers will – in teamwork – explore different approaches, look at local and international examples, discuss methods, strategies, didactics and techniques, explore and try out ideas, build up hands-on experiences and create practical solutions for possible workshop needs.

Workshop 3: The Animated Line in VR_ Hand Drawn Animation in Oculus Quill

Mari Jaye Blanchard is an independent animator living and working in upstate New York. After receiving her MFA in Painting, she jumped ship and traded her brushes for a drawing tablet and a VR headset.
Along with several of her own shorts which have screened internationally including festivals in Annecy, Melbourne and Berlin, she has created animations for Sesame Workshop, MTV, Comedy Central and the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA). She is a NYFA Fellow, an avid fan of special effects makeup, and a co-founder of the NYC animation collective Family Camp. While she continues her own independent work, Mari Jaye gets daily inspiration from her students and colleagues at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) where she is an Assistant Professor in the School of Film and Animation. This workshop will explore how to use Oculus Quill to create hand-drawn, frame by frame animation in a three-dimensional VR space. After an introduction to the basics of the Quill UI including brushes, selection tools, and layers, we will dive right in to time-based drawing. Knowledge of traditional 2D techniques is a plus, but not required as participants design and create their own short animated VR experience.
