The urban structure of a city and especially the quality of its public spaces determine the living conditions of its inhabitants. The last two decades have been marked with uncontrolled urban development, attacking the very core of city’s values and identity. Communities have been deprived of their right to be part of the story of their city. The most under-priviledged have been subject to multilevel discrimination. Similar to other cultures around the world, we have our own story of local struggles of individuals and civil society groups demanding freedom and change. Our stories of civic space battle goes back to late last century and are still part of our daily life. The world history is full of similar stories, the struggles of those who stood up for change. The process of change was very slow. Instead we have experienced change in forms of restrictions (mechanisms and tactics used) and the ways in which people reacted to them, especially in the realm of civic space.
