The activist is an important pillar of contemporary society. Activists mobilize their communities to protest government malfeasance, corruption, irresponsibility, and things that “aren’t part of their business”. Artists serve as surprisingly effective activists. Art is an effective medium to spread ideas due to its accessibility and availability. It strips away the convoluted language of officials to the entire community to understand. Its visual interest promotes solidarity, awareness, and protest which is pivotal in defending human rights from government overreach. The saturation of social networks, technology, and mass media has only strengthened their role as methods of dissemination is reinforced. We will explore the role of artists and their works in promoting human rights and civic activism through a curated panel.
