As a child, I was warned about Abou Kees, “the Bag Man,” a figure from Arab folklore said to punish mischievous children. But what if this story is rooted in a real person—someone feared because of their intense, long-suppressed anger shaped by an unjust world? And if so, what does that say about us? Could we recognize parts of ourselves in Abou Kees, and what might we discover if we faced the “monsters” within ourselves and others?
